Current European ETIAS Information
NOTE: ETIAS won’t be active until late 2026. No date has been set yet.
What is ETIAS?
The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) is a new pre-travel authorization required for visa-free visitors to 30 European countries, including France. Similar to the US ESTA system, it’s designed to enhance security and streamline border checks.
Who Needs ETIAS? Citizens from 59 visa-exempt countries will need ETIAS, including travelers from:
- United States
- Canada
- Australia
- United Kingdom
- Japan
- New Zealand
When Does ETIAS Start? ETIAS will become mandatory in late 2026. The EU will announce the exact date several months in advance.
Key Details:
- Cost: €20 for adults (free for those under 18 or over 70)
- Validity: 3 years or until passport expires
- Processing Time: Usually within minutes, up to 30 days if additional verification needed
- Stay Duration: Multiple entries for up to 90 days within any 180-day period
- Application: Online via official ETIAS website or app (takes about 10 minutes)
What You’ll Need to Apply:
- Valid passport (must be valid for at least 3 months after intended stay)
- Payment card for the fee
- Travel details including first EU destination
- Background information on security, health, and criminal records
Important Notes:
- ETIAS is not a visa – it’s a travel authorization linked to your passport
- Approval doesn’t guarantee entry – border guards make final decisions
- You must still follow the 90-days-in-180-days rule
- Apply before booking flights/accommodation to avoid complications

Latest Information on the ETIAS
An email from ETIAS on October 24th, 2025:
Dear Mr. and Mrs. LinkParis,
The European Union is preparing to launch a new digital border system, the Entry/Exit System (EES), starting October 12, 2025.
Here’s what you need to know:What is EES?A digital border check system replacing passport stamps. Your entry, exit, or refusal will be electronically recorded.
Who does it apply to? Non-EU nationals traveling to the Schengen Area, whether you need a short-stay visa or travel visa-free. See who is exempt here.
Why does it matter? Faster border checks, stronger security, and less time waiting at passport control.
What about ETIAS? Once EES is fully implemented by April 2026, the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) will follow. You’ll only need to apply when ETIAS officially launches in late 2026.

For now, there’s nothing you need to do other than keep your passport valid, and be ready for a slightly different border experience the next time you travel.
