The bitter fight for northern France and Belgium, sometimes called the Ardennes offensive and ultimately known as the Battle of the Bulge, began with a surprise attack on December 16th, 1944, and effectively ended with Allied containment of the German attack on December 27th. An astounding 410,000 German troops and 610,000 Allied troops fought. The battle was the bloodiest of World War II, and the third deadliest in American history, with 70,000 casualties and 19,000 dead.

Along the way, your Battle of the Bulge primer begins. Highlights of the day include a visit to the Henri Chapelle ABMC Cemetery and Hamm ABMC cemetery; General Patton’s burial place/Butgenbach; HQ of the 99th Infantry Division and Wahlerscheid Road Junction, captured by the 2nd Infantry Division; Purple Heart Corner and the positions of the 3rd Battalion 393rd Infantry/Elsenborn Ridge and the North Shoulder.
