Five Days in Provence Itinerary

Day 1 — Arrive in Provence

Arrive at Avignon TGV station and transfer to the 4-star Hôtel de l’Horloge (or similar), right in the center of the old city. The hotel sits on Place de l’Horloge, Avignon’s main square, surrounded by charming cafés and restaurants.

The rest of the day is yours. If you have the energy after the train, the Pope’s Palace is a five-minute walk and worth seeing in the late afternoon light when the tour groups have thinned out. For dinner, the streets around the hotel are full of options — ask us for recommendations based on what you like.

Day 2 — Avignon

Breakfast at the hotel. The morning is free — a good time to wander the narrow streets of the old city or browse the shops along Rue de la République. At 12:30, sit down for a gourmet lunch (included, drinks extra) before meeting your private guide for an afternoon walking tour. You’ll visit the Pope’s Palace — the largest Gothic palace in the world, built in the 14th century when Avignon briefly replaced Rome as the seat of the Catholic Church.

Then on to the St. Bénézet Bridge, the famous “Pont d’Avignon” from the children’s song, which once stretched across the Rhône but now ends dramatically mid-river. Evening and dinner on your own.

Day 3 — Aix-en-Provence & the Luberon

Breakfast, then meet your guide for a private full-day tour. First stop is Aix-en-Provence, the old capital of Provence and Cézanne’s hometown. The city is known for its tree-lined Cours Mirabeau, its fountains, and its markets. From there you head into the Luberon — the landscape of honey-colored stone villages perched on hillsides that Peter Mayle made famous in A Year in Provence. Wine tasting at a local estate is included. If you’re interested, an optional truffle lunch can be arranged — Provence is one of France’s prime truffle regions, and depending on the season, you may be able to join a truffle hunt before lunch.

Day 4 — Van Gogh & Cooking Class

Breakfast, then meet your chef-guide at Les Halles, Avignon’s covered market. This is not a tourist market — locals shop here daily for produce, cheese, olives, and meat. You’ll pick ingredients with your guide, then cook a Provençal meal and eat what you’ve made. In the afternoon, drive to Arles and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.

Van Gogh spent the last turbulent years of his life in these towns, painting some of his most famous works — Starry NightCafé Terrace at Night, the self-portraits. In Saint-Rémy, you can visit the asylum where he was voluntarily committed and where he painted over 150 works in a single year. Along the way, Roman ruins including a triumphal arch and funerary monument set among centuries-old olive trees — scenes Van Gogh painted repeatedly.

Day 5 — Châteauneuf-du-Pape & Lavender

Breakfast and check out. Your final day is a private full-day tour starting with the Lavender Museum in Coustellet, which covers the history and distillation process of Provence’s signature crop. In June and July, the lavender fields are in full bloom and your guide will take you to the best viewing spots. Then on to Châteauneuf-du-Pape — the village that gave its name to one of France’s most celebrated wines. The vineyards here are covered in large round stones called galets that absorb the sun’s heat during the day and radiate it back at night, giving the grapes their distinctive character. You’ll visit two cellars for guided tastings. Lunch is included (drinks extra). Transfer to Avignon station for your train back to Paris.
