Two châteaux in a day, or five over two nights from Amboise

Tours, the city at the center of the Loire, is one hour from Paris by TGV. That makes a day trip easy and tempts people into overreach. Two châteaux in a day is a full day. Five in a day, which some coach itineraries advertise, means forty minutes inside each one and lunch in the bus. If you want five, take two nights.

One day: Chambord and Chenonceau
The Loire Valley Day Trip leaves Montparnasse before 8:00 a.m. Your guide meets you at the tourist office two minutes from Tours station. Chambord in the morning: François I’s hunting lodge with 440 rooms and the double-helix staircase. Lunch with Loire wines at a private estate. Chenonceau in the afternoon: the château that spans the River Cher, built and run by women for most of its history. You are back at Tours station for the evening TGV and in Paris for a late dinner. Both admissions and lunch are included. $325 per person plus rail. Tuesday to Sunday, April through October.
Two variations use the same day. The Wine and Castle Tour keeps Chambord and Chenonceau, swaps the estate lunch for a sommelier tasting at Caves Ambacia, and leaves lunch to you, at $255. It runs daily from February through October, which makes it the Loire day for a Monday or a March date. The Villandry and Azay-le-Rideau day skips the famous two for Villandry’s gardens and Azay’s moated Renaissance house, with a Vouvray tasting, at $260 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
Two nights: five châteaux from Amboise
The 2-Night Loire Valley Tour starts the same way, with the morning TGV and Chambord and Chenonceau on day one, then adds a tasting at Caves Ambacia and puts you in the 4-star Hôtel Clos Amboise at the foot of the royal château. Day two is Villandry, Langeais, and Ussé, with the morning free for the Château d’Amboise and Leonardo da Vinci’s Clos Lucé if you want them. Day three is a free morning in Amboise and a train to Paris when you choose. All admissions, tastings, and breakfasts are included. $1,050 per person plus rail. Daily except Sunday, March 15 to October 31.
What the second day buys
- Three more châteaux, each different: Villandry for gardens, Langeais for a medieval fortress with a drawbridge that still works, Ussé for the fairy-tale silhouette.
- Amboise, a river town with Leonardo’s tomb and the best small-town evening on the Loire.
- A slower Chambord. On the day trip Chambord gets the morning and the train sets the pace; on the two-night tour the evening is free and nobody watches the clock.
- A morning with nothing scheduled.
Who should take the day trip
Anyone with one day. The two famous châteaux are the ones people fly across the ocean for, and the day trip does them properly with lunch in between. Most of our Loire guests take this tour and go home happy.
Who should take two nights
Gardeners, for Villandry. Readers of French history who want Langeais and Amboise, where the Renaissance arrived in France. Couples who want a night away from Paris without a long transfer. Anyone who wants to see Chambord without a train to catch. The two-night tour costs a bit more than three day trips would, and covers ground no day trip can.
The five-day version
The Ultimate Loire Valley Castle Experience is eight châteaux over five days with private guides, two Relais & Châteaux hotels, and a two-star dinner at Christophe Hay. From $3,700 per person for two. It is a different product for a different trip.
