Day Trip from Paris to Alsace

Enjoy a day of breathtaking in Alsace.  Mountain views, quaint medieval villages, crisp wine and engaging history.  High speed rail to and from Strasbourg makes it an easy day trip.

The Alsace day tour is all about history and wine, a true dive into this fascinating region. The area has been officially French since 1919 and the Treaty of Versailles, but in fact has, by turns, been controlled by Rome, Germany, the Habsburg dynasty and others.  This is reflected in the wonderful architecture in dozens of preserved medieval-era villages and towns.

Alsace Day Tour Itinerary

After arriving via TGV rail from Paris, you’ll meet at the Strasbourg Tourist Office and head to the city of Colmar.  First stops are at the Pfister House, dating from 1537, and the Koifhus, dating from even earlier.  13th century St. Martin’s Church and a walking tour through “Little Venice” and the Tanners quarter complete the visit.

Next you’ll visit Eguisheim, a quaint town along the Alsace wine route.  Built around a 12th century castle, the cobbled streets and half-timbered houses have helped designate Eguisheim a “Beautiful Village of France.”  Nearby is Riquewihr, a fortified town that escaped many a conflict thanks to its still-standing medieval walls.  Lunch stop (not included) here.

After lunch, you’ll drive through the gentle hills dotted with vines dating to back to Roman times.  An afternoon tasting of whites will help you discern that particular Alsace note, an unoaked, crisp and floral taste.

Alsace Day Tour: Visit Haut Koenigsburg Castle

The Alsace Day Tour finishes with a guided tour of the Haut Koenigsburg Castle, once ruined, and restored under German rule just before World War I.  In medieval times, the castle was an essential means of controlling trade routes of wheat, wine and salt.

You’ll return to Strasbourg in time for the evening train back to Paris.  Overnight stay in Strasbourg available.  Contact us for details.
