What to see
Start on Place de la Comédie, the big oval square the locals call l’Œuf, the egg. The Opéra Comédie closes one end, and the Three Graces fountain stands in the middle; the 1776 original is inside the opera house.
Walk into the Écusson, the car-free old town. It has nearly 80 private mansions from the 17th and 18th centuries, and the tourist office’s guided walks take you into their courtyards. The Cathédrale Saint-Pierre is free and open Monday to Saturday, with a porch held up by two huge round pillars.
Give the Musée Fabre two hours for Courbet, Bazille, Cabanel’s Fallen Angel and a room of Soulages at the end.
Go up to the Promenade du Peyrou at sunset: a royal square finished in 1774, with Louis XIV on horseback, a water tower like a small temple, and the aqueduct that fed it running off toward the hills. The Arc de Triomphe at its gate can be climbed only on a guided tour.
Next to the cathedral, the Faculté de Médecine has trained doctors since 1220, the oldest medical school still working. Visits are by guided tour from the tourist office.

Getting there and around
TGV INOUI and OUIGO trains run from Paris Gare de Lyon; a few leave from Marne-la-Vallée or Austerlitz. Check whether yours arrives at Saint-Roch or Sud de France.
Until November 1, 2026, track works at the Corum send tram 3 around Saint-Roch station instead of through it, and tram 4 skips the Les Aubes stop.
From Montpellier airport, 8 kilometers out, shuttle 620 takes about 25 minutes to Place de l’Europe for €2, or €3 with a tram connection. A taxi is €17 to €24.
In the center, you walk. The City Card, from €22 for 24 hours, covers the Musée Fabre, several other museums and a guided walk; buy the version with transport if you want the trams included.
For the beach, take tram 4 to Garcia Lorca and bus 631 to Palavas-les-Flots, or tram 3 to Pérols and the beach shuttle to the Grand Travers, €3 for tram and shuttle together. Check that the beach buses are running before you go.
When to go
May, June and early September are warm without the July heat. July averages a high of about 30°C, and the city gets around 2,700 hours of sun a year.
September to November is the wettest stretch, and January averages a high of about 12°C.
The Corum, the congress center that houses the Opéra Berlioz, closed after weather damage in early October 2026, with no reopening date yet. Performances at the Opéra Comédie are going ahead as listed.
Plan around Monday, when the Musée Fabre and the Jardin des Plantes are closed. The market under the Arceaux aqueduct runs Tuesday and Saturday mornings, and a flea market fills the Peyrou on Sunday.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which Montpellier station should I use?
Montpellier Saint-Roch if you can: it is in the center, 200 meters from Place de la Comédie. Montpellier Sud de France is outside town; take tram 1 from there, about 20 minutes.
Are the trams in Montpellier free?
Only for residents of the Montpellier metro area. Visitors need a ticket: €2.10 for 90 minutes, from the machines at the stops or the TaM app.
Can you get to the beach from Montpellier without a car?
Yes. Take tram 4 and bus 631 to Palavas-les-Flots, or tram 3 and the shuttle to the Grand Travers beach. The two networks need two tickets, except on the Grand Travers shuttle, where a combined ticket is €3. Check that the beach buses are running before you go.
How many days do you need in Montpellier?
Two: one for the Comédie, the old town, the Musée Fabre and the Peyrou at sunset, and one for the beach or a market morning and the Jardin des Plantes.
Is there a tour I can add?
Yes, in Provence. Our One Night in Provence meets at Avignon TGV station: the Roman theater in Orange and a Châteauneuf-du-Pape tasting on the first day, then Arles, Les Baux and Saint-Rémy on the second.
