Best Time of Year for a Day Trip From Paris

Normandy and the wine regions, season by season

The cliffs and cratered ground at Pointe du Hoc on a grey day

Normandy runs year-round. The wine regions run from spring through the harvest. Mont Saint-Michel and the Loire run from March to October. Winter is quiet, cheap, and grey, and the D-Day beaches in a January wind are closer to June 1944 than a July afternoon is. Here is the calendar.

Normandy

The D-Day tour runs daily all year except June 6 and the major holidays. Weather on the Channel coast is rain and wind in any month; bring a shell and shoes that shed sand. The American Cemetery is open 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from April through September and 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. from October through March, and the flag lowering with Taps is one hour before closing, so 5:00 p.m. in summer and 4:00 p.m. in winter. The shared tour reaches the cemetery for it when the day allows.

  • April to June: the best light, long days, and the beaches before the summer crowd. Book three weeks ahead.
  • The week of June 6: no tours on the 6th. The days around it bring veterans, ceremonies, road closures, and full hotels in Bayeux. Come for the atmosphere or avoid the week; do not expect a normal day.
  • July and August: warm, busy at Pointe du Hoc and the cemetery in the afternoon, and the reason a small van beats a coach.
  • September and October: our favorite. Warm afternoons, thinner crowds, Taps at 5:00 p.m. until the end of September.
  • November to March: short days and the cemetery closing at 5:00 p.m., so the tour compresses. Empty beaches, empty museums, and a guide with time to talk.

Mont Saint-Michel

The day trip runs from March through October. Summer weekends fill the rock by noon; the day trip arrives after the coaches leave and the private van arrives before they come. The Mont Saint-Michel options page has the timing.

Champagne

Veuve Clicquot and the Épernay day run from mid-March into November. Mumm runs Monday to Saturday all year except December 25 to February 10. Moët runs Friday to Sunday all year. The harvest is in September, when the villages fill with pickers and the growers are busiest; the visit is still fine, and the vines are heavy. May and June are the prettiest months in the vineyards. Reims Cathedral is open year-round.

Burgundy

The shared day runs Tuesday to Saturday from April through November, and by request in winter. Harvest in the Côte d’Or is mid-September, and the third weekend of November brings the Hospices de Beaune wine auction, which fills every hotel in Beaune. October, when the slopes turn gold, is the month to photograph.

Bordeaux

The wine day runs daily except Monday from April through October. Saint-Émilion is hot in August. The harvest is late September into October and the châteaux still receive visitors through it. Winter tours are by request.

The Loire

Chambord and Chenonceau run Tuesday to Sunday, April 1 to October 31. The Wine and Castle day runs from February. The gardens at Villandry are at their best from June through September. Chenonceau is crowded on July weekends; the day trip visits Chambord in the morning and Chenonceau after lunch.

Versailles and Giverny

Versailles is open all year except Mondays. Giverny is open April 1 to October 31; the tulips flower in April and May and the water lilies from June through September. The fountain shows at Versailles run on weekends from spring through autumn.

Closures to know

  • Bayeux Tapestry museum: closed for rebuilding until October 2027.
  • Versailles and the Louvre: Mondays and Tuesdays, respectively.
  • Bordeaux châteaux: Mondays.
  • Every tour: Christmas Day and New Year’s Day; most: Bastille Day, July 14, and May 1.

Questions

What is the best month for the D-Day beaches?

September. Warm, quiet, and the flag lowering still at 5:00 p.m. May and early June are a close second, with the anniversary week the exception.

Do the Normandy tours run in winter?

Yes, daily except Christmas and New Year’s. The cemetery closes at 5:00 p.m. from October through March, so the day is shorter.

What time is Taps at the American Cemetery?

One hour before closing: 5:00 p.m. from April through September and 4:00 p.m. from October through March.

Which wine tour runs in January?

Moët & Chandon, Friday to Sunday. Mumm resumes February 10. Burgundy and Bordeaux run winter dates on request.

Should I avoid the week of June 6?

If you want a normal touring day, yes. If you want to see the anniversary, come, book everything months ahead, and expect closures and crowds.
