Loire Valley Vouvray Day Trip Itinerary: Villandry, L’Islette and Wine

High-speed TGV rail takes you an amazing 145 miles in about an hour.  Upon arrival in the city of Tours, meet your guide at the nearby tourist office and begin a lovely day discovering France’s historic and gorgeous châteaux country. You’ll visit two castles, and one of the largest formal gardens in Europe:

Visit Villandry Castle

Villandry was the last Renaissance castle built in the Loire Valley. In the early 20th century, the sadly neglected gardens and castle were restored to their 16th century glory by a wealthy American heiress, Ann Coleman, and her French husband Joachim Carvallo.

There is a vibrant heirloom plant conservation program on site. Locals often buy their spring plantings from the castle grounds.

Villandry is really just a very grand version of a family home, as it is occupied by Carvallo heirs.

Visit L’Islette Castle

Gorgeously set on an island in the Indra river, the chateau is in the heart of the Touraine.  Its small scale means you can see every room, and maybe even meet the family that still lives there.  You’ll enjoy aperitifs and snacks along the river after your tour.

A quick stopover back in Tours will allow a chance for an additional snack if you wish.

Your afternoon is spent at a Vouvray estate for a tour and wine tasting.  A highlight is a visit to tenth-century limestone caves for more tastes and local wines and cheeses.
